Create Your Own Pencil Eraser Topper

As a child, I remember collecting an insane number of cute and quirky pencil eraser toppers. I loved them! Now, I craft more than I collect, so I was thrilled to learn I can actually create my own pencil eraser toppers. Yes, the love of pencil eraser toppers is being passed down to my children and the sky’s the limit for what I can create.

I recently came across Eraser Clay by Sculpey. Yes, the same brand that offers bakeable clay for projects also offers bright and fun colors of oven bake clay to make your own erasers. Yes, they do erase pencil marks, unlike other Sculpey clays. Going the next step to create your own pencil eraser topper is easy. I found an assortment of colors in my local Michael’s and also on Amazon.

There are some simple suggestions for working with this type of clay. Be sure your hands and work area are clean and free of lint, the clay will pick up on any oils or coloring on your hands. Place any unused clay in zip top bag or air tight container so it doesn’t dry out. Be sure to work the clay and warm it up for easier molding.

Create your own pencil eraser top.  I created a simple cupcake pencil eraser top for my daughter.

1. Roll out a small amount of pink for the cherry on top.
2. Create a larger section of purple for the base. Roll it on the table to smooth out the edges, then press the tip of the pencil into the bottom for the perfect indentation. Make sure to press the pencil in far enough to hold the weight of your eraser topper. With a thin knife, put ridges around the base.
3. For the frosting, roll out a long snake of yellow, ( I just happen to be a pro at snake rolling from hours of clay play as a child), then wind the cord on top of the purple base.
4. Place the pink cherry on top  of the yellow “icing”,  cut tiny pieces in different colors to create “sprinkles” and place them randomly on the “icing”.
5. Baking time!  Place the sculpture on a baking sheet (I reserve one especially for crafting) and bake at 250 degrees. The length of time it needs is determined by the thickness of your finished product. The package suggests 20 minutes per 1/4″ of thickness. I baked this pencil eraser topper for just under 30 minutes. Remove from the oven and let cool completely.

Then find a lonely pencil to top.
