Crochet a Car Beanie

Winter is almost over but there is still time to make a little beanie for the auto buffs in your life. I made this hat for one of the preschoolers who attends my story-times. It is a basic beanie with color changes and some stitching added to it and can be easily recreated by a beginner crocheter.

Car Beanie

This beanie is designed for a 3-5 year old.

Materials

  • Size H crochet hook.
  • Worsted weight yarn in blue,black, green, yellow, and white.
  • A needle to weave in the ends
  • Scissors

Abbreviations:

  • ch:chain
  • sl st: Slip stitch
  • dc: double crochet

To make your hat

Using blue yarn

Ch 3 and join with sl st to make circle
Rnd 1: ch 2, 11 dc in ring, join with sl st {10dc}
Rnd 2: ch 2, (2dc in each dc), join with sl st {20dc}
Rnd 3: ch 2, (dc in next dc, 2 dc in next dc), join with sl st {30dc}
Rnd 4: ch 2, (dc in next 2 dc, 2 dc in next dc), join with sl st {40dc}
Rnd 5: ch 2, (dc in next 3 dc, 2dc in next dc), join with sl st {50dc}
Rnd 6: ch 2, dc in next 8 dc, (2 dc in next dc, dc in next 5 dc), join with sl st {57 dc}
Rnd 7-10: ch 2, dc in each dc, join with sl st {54 dc}

Switch to black yarn

Rnd 11-14: ch 2, dc in each dc, join with sl st {54 dc}

Switch to green

Rnd 15-16:17: ch 2, dc in each dc, join with sl st {54 dc}

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Using black yarn make two “v” birds. (I used the yarn needle and weaved black yarn through the hat to create birds)

For the sun, using yellow you will make a circle

Ch 3 and join with sl st to make circle

Ch 2, dc 12 times into circle.

Fasten off leaving a long tail to attach to the hat.

When attaching the sun to the hat, make ‘rays’ by weaving yellow yarn around the sun.

Add either a car button or applique and you’re done!
