DIY Toy Candle Holder

Summer brings many birthday celebrations in my family. My youngest just turned one and my daughter will be 5 soon. With family parties, parties with friends and other celebrations I am always looking for fast and fun ways to make each birthday special. So what about creating a memorable candle holder? These only take a few minutes to create, and you will be able to make something special for each person in your life.

Candle Holder

Seems like every holiday and party favor bag is full of small plastic toys in the shape of animals, dinosaurs, etc. For the baby I wanted to keep things simple, but fun. I just happened to have some bunnies, a turtle and rhino sitting around. Luckily, my son donated a few plastic dinosaurs to the cause.

The  items needed for this craft are:

    1. Small plastic toy
    2. awl or drill with a small drill bit
    3. Krylon Short Cuts Metallic Paint in Gold Leaf
    4. Candle holder
    5. birthday candle
    6. lighter

With your toy, determine the best place for your candle. I chose this dinosaur and with an awl, I pierced and widened a hole big enough for my candle holder to fit in. The plastic inside most of these toys is very soft and compacts easily. The other option is to use a drill with a small drill bit.

Next, insert the candle holder. I found the plastic held the holder firmly in place. You could use a little glue here if you like.

Place the toy inside a box or place appropriate for spray painting. The Krylon metallic paint dried quickly, so once my initial spray dried, I turned the project over to cover the whole toy. I went back and added one more coat to be sure the whole toy, including the candle holder, was covered.

With a lighter, heat the bottom your candle and insert it into the holder.  The melted wax will help to hold it in place.

Now you are ready to create any type of candle holder you want!  My kids are already coming up with ideas for me to make more.

What type of candle holder would you create? Do you have any birthdays coming up?

I found this to have major ooooh’in and ahhh factor, totally adorable and such a fun way to create such a memorable birthday keepsake! Thank you for sharing and thank you for being our Featured #TBCcrafters Blogger this week on the Brand Connection.

  2. What a cute idea! I would use the animals as they are with the candles in them too.

  3. That is adorable!! Reminds me of the one we used to go play on in Palm Springs!! What a great way to add a little special to the birthday cake without paying a fortune!! Love it!

  4. Very cool idea! I could totally do this and I think it would be great with other objects as well! Nice!

  5. That is very cute and unique. The birthday kids would love the candle holders.

  6. I just love this idea and I know my kids would love it, but what do you think about the dried spray paint being in contact with an edible surface? Lisa

    • Lisa, I had the same question so placed mine on a cupcake stand. I also used them to decorate the birthday table. I decorated each of my cupcakes so didn’t want to demolish that with a topper anyway. 🙂

  7. Love this. Did make several with candle holders I had in the house, but when I wanted to make more I couldn’t find candle holders any where. They apparently are a choking hazard and are no longer made.

  1. […] This adorable candle holder is just perfect for a little one’s birthday. Forget those store bought number candles and create something a little special for your child’s special day. My boy would actually go crazy if I drilled a hole into one of his dinosaurs as he is “attached” to everything right now. Super cute idea though. Full tutorial can be found at Thebrandconnection.com.
