Homemade Grapefruit Goat’s Milk Soap

Every year I try to make something special to give family and friends around the holidays. Usually it is something edible, but since so many of my friends have varied food restrictions or are trying to cut back on calories, I wanted to keep Christmas homemade but also useful. I know, soap probably doesn’t come to mind, but natural and unique beauty and bath products are always appreciated.

This DIY Goat’s Milk Soap project is very simple. All you need are a few items to get started and then once you make your own soap, I am sure you will be trying it again.

You Will Need:

  • 1 lb. Goat’s Milk Soap Base – Suspension Formula (this allows the zest or additive to “float” instead of settling to the bottom)
  • 5 drops Essential Oil – in Grapefruit
  • 1 tsp. Vitamin E oil
  • zest of 2 grapefruit
  • Silicone Mold

I found all my items online on amazon, but check with your local craft store. They may have everything you need to get started with soap making, too.

I started by cutting my goat’s milk soap base into cubes for faster heating. Put it in a microwave-safe bowl, like a glass measuring cup. Heat the soap base in 30 second increments, stirring between heating. Heat the base gently and slowly.

Once the goat’s milk soap base is completely melted, stir in the grapefruit essential oil, vitamin E oil and grapefruit zest. Stir till it is well combined. The special suspension base will help to keep the zest from all collecting in the bottom of your finished soaps. If you want to add soap coloring, this would be the time to add it. There are dyes made specifically for soap making, if you desire. I like to keep mine simple and enjoy the milky white of the goat’s milk.

Pour into the silicone soap mold. Let it cool undisturbed for at least an hour. Then gently use your hands to remove the goat’s milk soaps from the flexible mold.

Homemade Grapefruit Goat’s Milk soaps are meant to be enjoyed right away. This soap includes real zest and while the vitamin E oil helps to preserve it, the soap will start to fade after time. Store your excess soaps in a cool, dry place and only get them wet when you are ready to use them. Tie them up with a little twine and cellophane for a unique Christmas gift this year.

Have you ever tried soap making? How would you scent/decorate your bars?

How exciting, making my own soap has always been one of my “want to do’s, but have never gotten around to doing it. I love that you used natural products and fresh products. These are beautiful and anyone would be very lucky to receive such a beautifully handmade thoughtful gift. Pinning!
