In some ways, these devices can enrich our lives, making it easier to communicate and giving us access to important information.  However, there can be too much of a good thing, and in the case of electronic, it is very easy to cross that threshold.

What are some of the problems caused by too much screen time? While the effects vary based on the age of the child, they include everything from delayed speech to weight gain.  But cutting out all screen time is not the right answer for many families, and with school-aged children, it is all but impossible.  So, what is the solution?  Managing their screen time.  And here are some ways to do that.

Be Selective with Apps

Before you download an item for your child, research it. Check out the reviews in the app store, see if any bloggers have reviewed it, and get a feel for it to know if it will enrich your child’s life or just rot their brain.  Once you decide to download an app, download it on your device first and give it a try to be certain it meets your standards.

Schedule Electronics-Approved Hours

Most children will use their electronic devices all day, every day if given the chance. But they should not be given that chance.  Instead, set specific hours in which electronics are allowed—a window of perhaps two hours a day.

And Don’t Allow Them the Full Two Hours

Remember, this is a window of opportunity, not a set block of 100% screen time. The average child should not have more than 14 hours of screen time each week, and that includes things like researching at school and playing video games at a friend’s house.  The younger the child, the less screen time they should have.

Control Technology with Technology

Some apps have built-in timers, like YouTube Kids, which allows you to determine how long your child can play and then have the app stop working after that time is up. Another option is to install an app that gives you remote control over their devices, shutting it off once you feel they have been given enough time.

Keep Electronics Out of Bedrooms

First of all, it is harder to control devices when they are in their rooms. But more than that, this contributes to the isolation electronic devices can cause.  Instead, restrict electronic devices to the living room only if possible.

Come Up with Fun Activities

Finally, if you want your child to be happy about less screen time, make that time fun. Do family game nights, create obstacle courses, and just generally have fun at home without screens.
