Check it Out! I have the most magical photo of my husband Delmar that I took while we were at the beach for our 25th Wedding Anniversary. Since his passing it has become one of my most treasured photos. I also have 2 containers full of sand and other treasures that we collected from the very beach the photo was taken. I wanted to find a way to create a memorial for my husband using these treasures and photograph. I know that I could put the photo in a frame and the treasures in a bowl. But when I saw this Decobloc at Hobby Lobby, I just knew it would be the perfect base to create a wonderful memorial to Delmar.
Glass Memorial Block
Materials:
1 DecoBloc
1 Photograph
Various Beach Treasures and sand (or something meaningful to you)
Ribbon
Jolee’s Boutique Glitter Word Sticker
1 sheet of light green velum
Glue Dots
Remove Label from Glass Block.
Trim photo down down to fit inside the opening of the block. I debated on putting it in a frame inside the block, but I decided that I wanted to plant it in the sand, literally! I wanted his feet to be in the sand.
Choose treasures to put inside the DecoBloc.
Consider the appropriate saying or poem to print onto the vellum. After deciding on the poem and trying a few different techniques I realized printing the poem out on velum would give me the effect I wanted to achieve.
Using a plain piece of paper I traced the outside of the block, doing a little adjusting to get the exact size square I needed to place inside the block.
I printed my poem onto the velum and cut the sheet using my template. Vellum is expensive, so using a template ensures it won’t go to waste. Use a corner rounder to round the edges for a nice clean look.
Gently fold the vellum without creasing it and place it through the opening in the top, pushing it to the back of the block.
Using a paper cup as a funnel, add the sand to create about a 2″ base . Then add the picture and treasures. I adjusted them to my liking. by keeping the taller pieces of driftwood off to the side so that the poem would stay visible.
To finish the look, add a word or phrase to the exterior of the block, I used a glitter word sticker and simply adhered it.
Choose a coordinating ribbon, wrap the block and create a bow.
I absolutely love how it turned out and it fits perfectly on our memorial table. The poem is very fitting as Delmar’s sweet memory will forever remain in our hearts.
This Valentine’s Day will be my first one alone in over 25 years, so this Memorial Block is my way of celebrating my love for Delmar.
This is so beautiful! I would make one for my sister and grandmother. I would also love to do this for memories of my kids when they were little
Thanks Rachel!
