Patriotic Flag Tee

July 4th brings forth many celebrations and fireworks. The skies light up at night with bountiful blasts and sparkling lights, but what is at the center of it all, is what started the celebration in the first place. July 4th commemorates the day we achieved our independence when the Declaration of Independence was signed in 1776 and as you know the Declaration of Independence is essentially a statement of human rights! That’s a very big thing we are celebrating today. On Independence Day, you’ll see a lot of different traditions being shared, from the fireworks, to barbeques and family gatherings, and yes, even patriotic songs. Every I see the big bountiful flag blowing in the breeze, I am reminded of –the land of the free and the home of the bra ve of the Star Spangled Banner. Because of that song and that traditional reminder, I chose this craft for today. It was picture posted on the Girl Scouts  Nation’s Capital Facebook Page and I knew that I just had to create it.

Without much instruction, I headed to Michael’s and after searching for about 20 minutes picked up their last bottle of “Scarlet Pearl” and “Azure Blue Metallics” fabric paint, some blue and red glittery ribbon, and a white t-shirt, and brought it all home. Materials needed for both mini projects: White Tee, Red and Blue Fabric Paint, Paint Brush, Water, Hair Tie, Colorful Ribbon and scissors (puffy paint optional)

Steps to create Patriotic Flag Tee

Steps for shirt

Paint left hand blue (and place on shirt immediately, it dries quickly) and press onto shirt in the upper left corner close to the armpit. Slowly lift as to avoid smudging.

Using your paint brush add “Scarlet Pearl” paint directly onto brush and paint 7 lines leaving space in between as to represent the rows on the flag. Be sure to work “around” the “stars” handprint to make it look authentic.

Using puffy paint, add the year in the lower right corner (optional – I like to remember the year, especially when using Isabella’s handprint)

Cut 4 even strips of red and blue ribbon (2 each) and tie each ribbon onto the hair tie on two opposite ends, one red and one blue, and that’s it. Can be worn as a hair tie or a bracelet. Isabella preferred it as a bracelet, I think the glitter on the ribbons pulled at her curls.

Happy 4th of July to all!
