There are so many Ways to Show Employees Appreciation, something to remember is that appreciation is expressed through not just words, but actions. I spent long hours working really hard to meet the insane deadlines, milestones and requirements set for my position. I worked as an Executive Assistant to the CEO, the VP of Sales/Marketing, the VP of Legal,  the VP of Finance, Human Resources and I was the receptionist, who maintained all of the office equipment, supplies, materials and the kitchen. Not only that, I was also the Receivables Manager in charge of reducing our outstanding invoices.  I worked with some of the most challenging personalities, no, I was not the perfect employee, but I did in fact work hard and reduced our outstanding debt. I remember one year, the CEO came to my “desk” (in the reception area out in the open) and said to me, Congratulations, you just earned yourself a $5,000 raise. I was so excited and overjoyed, I immediately thanked him and asked what I had done to deserve such a raise. He just stated, you’ll see it in your next paycheck and walked away.

Initially, I had felt so honored, but at the same time I didn’t. Sure, a $5,000 raise sounds amazing, but it’s also nice to know that you are appreciated for your hard work. I received a $5,000 raise not because of how hard I worked or even what I achieved. In fact, it wasn’t based on merit at all,  because EVERYONE in the company, high and low, received a $5,000 raise that year.  Appreciation comes in not just words, but actions. Shortly thereafter, the company began to downsize, and by downsize I mean, MY hours were cut in half and I lost all of my benefits.  That $5,000 raise was a joke,  a fluke, a ruse and it showed. How’s that for appreciation?

It is not just important that employers show their employees appreciation during the holiday season, but also all year round. Yes, money is wonderful, but sometimes what an employee wants/needs most is to hear is that you notice their hard work and you appreciate what they do for your company. Small gestures of appreciation and thanks go a long way to help boost morale for a very happy, healthy and thriving working environment. What can employers do on a regular and consistent basis to remind their employees just how much they are appreciated for the work that they do every day?

Show your employees appreciation with a few of these suggestions:

  • Just say “Thank You!” Show your employees that you notice their efforts by saying: “Thank you for helping out in the xyz department,” “Thank you for putting in those extra hours,” “Thank you for your contribution on the xyz project,” etc., etc., …. “I/we appreciate it.”
  • Surprise them. Randomly bring the whole office coffee and donuts or coffee and bagels and let your employees know its because you appreciate them.
  • Let them know you care. If an employee is out sick, has surgery, is hospitalized, lost a loved one, gave birth or got married, let them know you are thinking of them, praying for them or wishing them well by sending a card or flowers or both.
  • Celebrate Birthdays! A company I used to work for would celebrate birthdays every month. They’d buy a large sheet cake and refreshments, announce the birthdays for that month, everyone would sing Happy Birthday to them and they’d get a card signed by the whole office (with gifts or $$ via donation).
  • Keep them informed. One thing employees appreciate is knowing what’s going on, what’s going to happen, changes and updates (both business and personal). Schedule a monthly meeting where everyone can catch up on the good, the bad, the fun and yes, the ugly. Treat them to an in office lunch (combine it with Celebrating Birthdays) and make it an afternoon.
  • The Afternoon Off! During the holidays, when you’re off to go on your vacation two days before the rest of the company, call in, wish them a great and safe holiday and send them home early. No one wants to work all day the day before a holiday and in your absence, they’re probably not working much anyway (hey, just being honest). They want to celebrate just as much as you.
  • Gifts of Thanks and Appreciation. Thanksgiving Turkey. Christmas bonus. Yes, those are nice. It can be as big, small or as elaborate as you’d like, but trust that, a Gift Card to the grocery store or a Thanksgiving turkey, carving set, etc., is much appreciated.
  • Award Them. Reward Them. Acknowledge their hard work! Throw a banquet (once a year) probably around the holidays.  Let them dress up, dine out, drink a little, and give out awards, rewards, plaques, trophies, small gifts as tokens of your appreciation for their hard-work all year!
  • Treat them. A happy hour out as a company, an afternoon out to the movies or any event you organize with your employees in mind is sure to please.
  • Recognition. There are so many different Ways to Show Employees Appreciation, its that little extra something that shows them you take notice, and it doesn’t have to cost you a penny.

Truthfully, there are many different ways to show employees appreciation. Remember that in business we learn to say thank you for your partnership or business with other companies. We send them elaborate gifts and cards each year, but we often neglect the very employees who make it all possible. It is good business practice to thank ALL OF THOSE who help make our businesses profitable and especially those who help your business function and thrive every single day.

  1. I appreciate you Rose!! I’m sure you’re a blessing to have on the work force. We don’t need to be working for the “good jobs”, but it never hurts to hear that once in awhile, instead of the “you should haves.”

      Well, that was almost 5 years ago, I left the workforce to be a full time stay at home mom. I could no longer work for a company that didn’t appreciate my work or respect me as an employee. Best decision I ever made. Thank you for your comment Jamie!
