How to Watch Calories

  • Invest in a simple calorie counting book. If you have a smartphone, there are many free apps that you can download to help you
  • Watch out for liquid calories. There can be quite a few calories in juice, soda, iced tea, and lemonade. Water is the healthiest no calorie beverage there is.
  • Start with a green salad.  There are very few calories in green salads.  Just watch when you start adding things like meat, cheese, croutons and salad dressings.
  • Skip the heavy pasta and potato salads. Mayonnaise contains quite a few calories. If you must have these, limit yourself to a tablespoon of each.  Load up instead of fresh fruits and veggies and lean proteins.
  • Choose lean proteins.  A chicken breast will have less calories than spare ribs.  To save even more calories, remove the skin from the chicken breast as well.

  • Watch the desserts.  A fruit salad will be a better choice for dessert than an ice cream cone.  If you need to have a cold treat, try an Italian ice or sherbet in a bowl instead of on a cone.
  • Get up and move.  Throw the frisbee with the kids.  Walk the dog up the road.  Go for a swim.  Play beach volleyball.   Work off some of the food that you’ve just enjoyed.

What are your favorite tips for watching calories in the food you eat this summer? Do you try to watch the types of foods that you eat? Or do you just make certain that you get in extra exercise to work off any extra calories? Happy Summer!

These are great tips. I must admit…desserts are a huge weakness of mine!

These are great tips. I try to stick to water or plain seltzer for drinks, and fruit for desserts, veg for appetizers. That allows me a little more wiggle room for the BBQ stuff!
