When I first started blogging six years ago, blogging was a relatively new type of media.  However, over the past few years, I’ve noticed many new bloggers interested in reviewing products. With all of the blogs out there, it is very easy to get lost in the shuffle. Brands, public relations companies and blogging groups receive many links to reviews.  If you want to be remembered for the next campaign or product, it’s a good idea to make sure that your review stands out.

How to Write a Review that Stands Out

So, how can you stand out from all of the other review bloggers? Here are a few tips that have worked well for me.

  • Let your contact know when you’ve received their product. They will appreciate that you keep in touch and will remember how easy it was to work with you.
  • Be original.  A review doesn’t mean you should copy information from the product description page or the press release.  Be sure you write your own content for the review.  A review should reflect your options about the product.  How does it taste, smell, feel, or sound? How did your skin react to it when you used it? Did it wash well or fall apart? Did the outfit fit or did it run small?  Think about what your reader might want to know about the product.
  • Taking your own pictures is always the best solution. Show the product being used.  Pour the cereal into a bowl, add milk and a spoon and take a photograph.   Wear the shoes and show off a cute outfit. Have your child play with the toy and show the various options it has. Pour some shampoo in your hand or show how well it lathers. Create a recipe using the food or cookbook you were sent.  Put the food on a cute plate with a napkin and fork in the background.
  • If lighting inside is an issue for your photographs, take a picture of it outside. I take all my food outside to photograph since my home doesn’t have good inside light.
  • Make the photographs as large as the width of your posting area. No one wants to squint at a tiny little photograph. You want your photos to be eye catching.
  • Before you publish your post, PLEASE check your post for typos, punctuation errors, and grammar mistakes. Check to be certain that your links work and go where you intend them to.  Double check the correspondence from the company and make sure all the information they asked you to include is included. Add links to their social media sites so your followers can connect with them in the future. Let your readers know where they can purchase the item.

Now that your review is posted,  email a link to the person you have been working with.   Share your review on the company’s Facebook site or tag them so they see it.  When you share your post on Twitter, make sure you include the company in your tweet so they notice it. Remember though, just because the PR company sees your review, doesn’t mean the company will.

To keep in touch with your contact, look for their social media information in the signature of their email.  Like their company on Facebook or follow them on Twitter.  The more you stay connected, the more likely they are to notice you in the future.  Keep working to make your posts the best that they can be.   Even the best blogger can improve what they do!

Fantastic tips! The tips about photos are of utmost importance. My content width is a little over 600 so I always make sure the photos are 600 wide, plus using your own pictures is important. I never thought as far as showing the lather of my shampoo! This is a great post.
