The Importance of Mobile Optimization

If you’re like many small business owners, your website is probably one of the most important sales tools that you have. It only makes sense to be sure that your site is as user-friendly and mobile-friendly as possible.  If you’re still not certain you need to have a mobile optimized site, here are a few reasons I recommend it:

  1. Unlike traditional desktop computer users, mobile users want their information in fast, easy to read portions. Mobile purchases are often impulse buys and given that many mobile users have higher than average disposable incomes, they tend to spend more money on each transaction.
  2. Recent studies show that mobile users are visiting websites while they’re watching TV, commuting, standing in lines and even while on their desktop computers.  Websites that cannot handle mobile traffic will see their search rank drop as a result of Google’s Hummingbird update.
  3. If a reader cannot access your site on their mobile device in a format they want, they are more likely to find a competitor rather than find a desktop computer to try again. You may have not only lost one sale but given your competitor a new loyal customer.
  4. If your site isn’t mobile optimized, links and other necessary information may not be easily visible to someone who is trying to view your site on a mobile device. Be sure that your calls to action are easy to see via mobile devices to help your conversion rate.

To check and see if your site is mobile optimized, just view it on your smartphone. Ask yourself how quickly your site loads, how easy the content is to read and consider how you can improve the overall usability. You can also use Google’s Mobile Friendly Test to see what Google thinks.
