Tips for Selling at a Craft Fair

While you might not see that level of success right off the bat, getting into the craft fair scene is a good way to get started. But, before you set up your booth at your local fair, keep the following tips in mind.

Get to Know the Scene

When we were young, craft shows tended to be a lot of inspirational posters and doilies. However, these fairs have evolved with the times in ways you might not have expected. Many crafters offer wares that look right at home with modern décor as well as creative pieces that bring out the “art” in “arts and crafts”. Take some time to explore craft fairs near you before you get started.

Understand the Market

While you are at the craft fairs, look at more than just what is offered—pay attention to what is being bought. There are lots of vendors offering lots of cool items, and you will see many people stopping to take them in. However, not all of these cool items get purchased, and that is what you need to be looking at if you are hoping to turn your passion into profit.

Be Mindful of Overhead

When pricing your goods, you need to be mindful of your overhead. While you will likely think about the cost of materials and packaging, what many crafters tend to forget—at least the first time around—is the booth fee. When selling at fairs, you need to work this into your pricing.

Make Sure the Price is Right

At any craft fair, there will be at least a couple of vendors who are selling paintings or sculptures for thousands of dollars. Seeing all those zeros might make you feel dizzy, but understand that those artisans tend to cart the same items around to many different fairs before ever making a sale—if they manage to sell them at all. Most people come to craft fairs looking to find something special and unique that will not break the bank, so aim for that price range
