With all the new social sharing sites, it’s not surprising that it can be difficult to keep up with them all. One of the more recent additions is the social sharing app “Snapchat.” Snapchat is a messaging app that was created in 2011. Snapchat lets you share moments with others for up to 10 seconds.
To use Snapchat, you begin with a photo, video or drawing and then send it to a friend. If you want your “snap” to be seen by others, you can add it to a story associated with your profile. What makes Snapchat unique is the fact that your snap is visible to your friends for 10 seconds. After ten seconds, it disappears. The only way to save your snap is to take a screenshot on your phone.
If you want your snap to stay visible for slightly longer, you can add it to your story. Photos added to My Story are visible for 24 hours before disappearing. You can add multiple photos to your story to present a brief look at your day for your followers.
While some may wonder what the purpose of sharing snaps for only 10 seconds is, as of 2014, Snapchat users were sending 700 million photos and videos per day. According to statistics, Snapchat is targeted mostly toward teens with the bulk of their users falling in the 17 to 34-year-old range.
The first step is to download Snapchat, which is free and available for both iOS and Android. After downloading the app, create an account and user ID. The app will open, and you will be presented with a camera screen that is your home screen. You will see a round button on the bottom center of your screen that is used to take your snap (photo or video). After taking your photo or video, decide who you want to send your snap to or add it to your “Story.”
Snapchat does have other features including chat, video, and discovering brands where you can watch videos from places like People and The Food Network. Snapchat is even starting to get into creating original content.
If your target reader or target consumer is between 17 and 34, I would recommend you take the time to create a Snapchat profile and regularly share snaps. For those whose target market isn’t in that range, it still can’t hurt to make a profile and use it regularly. You never know when it will gain in popularity.
