Do you use music to relax while you are working? We have playlists for working out, playlists for the car, and many of us even have playlists for cooking. But what about playlists for working? Research has shown that music can help us relax and concentrate better—both of which can make you more productive at your work.
But not all music is going to work. If you pick the wrong music, you can end up distracted, frustrated, and much worse off than you were without it. So, what are some choices that can work for you?
Ambient music is a genre that focuses on different elements than traditional music genres. Rather than being built around structure and rhythm, it focuses on tone and the building of atmosphere around the sounds. Unlike traditional music, it works quite well as background noise, relaxing you without distracting you.
True genre pieces will avoid lyrics and tend to run longer than most songs, even up to an hour in length. These longer pieces are excellent for fading into the background without pulling you out of the moment with transitions to other songs.
We are all familiar with instrumental music as it is used pretty much anywhere we are meant to be relaxed, from stores to hospitals to elevators. This music serves its purpose by removing words, which tend to distract, and utilizing flowing melodies that easily transition from one to another. It is also a highly varied, broad genre of music that gives you plenty of options to choose from.
Another option that can work is listening to foreign language music—but it should be in a language you do not know. When you do not understand the words being sung, you are less likely to be distracted by them. However, the songs will not transition as smoothly as they do with ambient and instrumental music.
Finally, it isn’t music, but ambient noise is a good option for helping you concentrate while still allowing you to relax. There are many apps you can use for this as well as white noise machines.
Where can you find this music? Most streaming services will have playlists ready for you to use. Simply search your service to find what works for you.
