“Never put off till tomorrow what may be done day after tomorrow just as well.”
― Mark Twain
If you have a habit of procrastinating, you aren’t alone. The truth is that most of us are more than happy to continually push tasks back until we reach the point that we are rushed to get them done. But living in a frenzied, stressed state isn’t the best for us. And that means we need to figure out how to stop procrastinating.
And no, you don’t need to be an incredibly disciplined individual to do it. Many people manage to get things back on track using simple tricks. Try out a few of the ideas below and see if they help you stop procrastinating.
Easier said than done, right? Well, there is a service that can help you with that. Called StickK, you set a goal and the date you must accomplish it by. Then, you put up some money to guarantee you will get it done; if you don’t, that money goes to charity. You will be amazed by what a little financial incentive will get you to do.
What is a 5-minute rule? It is a rule that states that if you can do it in 5 minutes or less, you do not even put it on your to-do list; instead, you do it right now. This keeps the majority of small tasks off your list, which prevents you from feeling overwhelmed, and also ensures that these small tasks get done right now rather than being pushed back in favor of larger tasks.
Find a buddy and challenge them to always get a certain number of tasks completed each day. Some of us thrive in competitive environments, so if you do, this could be the change you need. And if you want, you can always wager a bit to see who will get the most done, or just pay up on the days you do not meet your goal.
Do you have some tricks you use to fight procrastination? Tell us about them! We are always looking for new ideas.
