Short on space? Not a problem! You can easily create a home office that requires very little space. And, assuming your work really starts to take off, you can always upgrade later. Below are some great ideas for how to create a home office in a small home.
Do you have a small closet that you don’t really need? Turn it into an office nook. Get rid of any rods and install shelving instead, with the lowest shelf being your desk. Just make sure you have enough room between the desk space and the next shelf. With an outlet or a power strip, a simple closet can provide you with all the office space you need.
Even in a small home, there is usually some space to be found. One spot we rarely think about is the foot of the bed. If you have a footboard, get rid of it to free up a little more room for your desk. Once your desk is in space, it will function as the footboard did while giving you an office and vanity space when getting ready in the morning.
Here is another great place to work from. This idea is particularly ingenious because you can keep an eye on the kids as you work. Try to find or make a taller desk that runs the full length of the couch and use bar chairs as seating, this way your desk can double as space for guests when entertaining.
Another option is to get a laptop cart. These carts are very small and are designed so the feet can roll underneath the couch or chair. This makes it easy to work from your living room without having to add a large piece of furniture.
We have all seen murphy beds that fold into the wall. Well, there are also desks that do the same. When not in use, they just fold right up, looking like artwork rather than a desk. This frees up floor space and makes it easy to get work out of sight and out of mind.
