How to Update WordPress Plugins Safely

In short, updating on WordPress can be a total mess. But it doesn’t have to be. Below are some tips on how to update WordPress plugins safely.

Back Up Your Site

Things can go wrong. In fact, if history is any indicator, things will go wrong. So, you need to start by ensuring that you are able to go back to the way things were should disaster strike. You do this by backing up your site before you start the update. If things go wrong, you simply restore the old version and try again. Yes, it may mean doing things over and over again to get the update right, but it is better than losing it all.

Turn Caching Off

This applies specifically to your plugins. If you have any caching plugins, turn them off before you start the update. Why should you do this? Because it is an extra performance executed by the back-end of your website. The less you have going on when the update is performed, the better.

Make Your Updates

Now is the time to update your plugins. Simply follow the usual steps to accomplish this. This step is probably the easiest of all.

Should something go wrong, go back to the saved version of your site and start over.

Turn Caching On

Now it is time to reverse this step and get things back to normal. Simply go back and turn this on.

Check Your Site

Look over your site completely before you back it up again, ensuring that everything looks correct. If it does, you are good to go and you should back it up once more. If it doesn’t, repeat the steps again.
