When it comes to most jobs, we have a pretty good idea of what they demand of us before we begin. Usually we know this because we have interacted with people performing these jobs throughout our lives. We know some of what teachers do because we went to school, and some of what doctors do because we visit the doctor. But most of us have never worked with a virtual assistant before. And, by the very nature of the job, it is hidden away from us.
But you have no doubt heard that it can be a lucrative field to enter, and might be interested in giving it a go yourself. But before you get started, let’s look at what you need to know before you become a virtual assistant.
When someone seeks out the assistance of a VA, it is because the day-to-day operations of their business have become too much for them to handle alone. In the majority of cases, these are small businesses that are the pride and joy of the person who owns them. Turning over the reins, even just a little bit, is incredibly difficult for them to do, and they need to know the person they are handing them to isn’t going to let them down. Set your hours of availability, clarify your tasks, and always do what you agree to do.
Chances are you won’t be a full-time VA for a single client, at least not at first. This means there is going to be a lot of juggling involved. On top of that, you are probably interested in VA work because it allows you some flexibility that traditional jobs do not. But if you are going to be as reliable as you need to be, you also need to be highly structured. Start looking into ways you can manage your time now, including using scheduling apps, so that you are not overwhelmed once you are in the thick of it.
Clients do not want to hold your hand, even at the beginning. If you have a question that can be answered through a simple Google search or by watching some YouTube tutorials, get it answered there. Your client will hire you because they want less work and less worry, not more. Be resourceful and only ask when you need to know specific preferences or directions from the client.
