How to Get Over a Fear of Public Speaking

How to Get Over a Fear of Public Speaking

Start with Simple Preparation

Some people can just get up there and wing it, relying on wit and improvisational skills. But this might not be the case for you. If it isn’t, start by preparing yourself. First, just start thinking about what you are going to be doing, allowing yourself to become comfortable with the thought. Then, start researching, pulling together material, creating slides and other items. From there, tailor your speech to these items and create notecards you can use to get you through your speech.

Practice, Practice, Practice

The more you practice your speech, the more it will be like second nature to you. Should something go wrong on the big day, you will handle it much better because you know your material and can work your way around the obstacle. Plus, the more you practice, the less you will fear.

Know Your Audience is Sympathetic

What are you afraid of? That the audience will laugh at the wrong moment? That they will boo you off stage? That they will throw tomatoes like a Bugs Bunny cartoon? None of this is going to happen. Audiences are sympathetic, and they are ready to work with your through any stumbles along the way.

Put a Friend in the Audience

Make sure this is a super supportive friend who will have your back should you stumble. You want this friend because when you get nervous, this is the person you will lock eyes with. If they know your speech, they can even get you back on track with simple reminders should you confuse yourself. They will be your anchor throughout the presentation.
