Is it time to purchase a new computer for blogging? Then you need to know what you are looking for before you head to the store. Many salespeople are working on commission and it is not uncommon for them to try to sell you a computer you do not need. Rather than walking out with a top-of-the-line gaming computer when you don’t do much more on it than blog, go in knowing exactly what you need from your purchase.
So, what do you need from a computer if its primary purpose is blogging?
Depending on the computer you are looking at, this might be called the processor or the CPU. This item is the most important because it is that part of the computer all your programs run from. If you do not want to run a lot of programs simultaneously, the main thing to look for is speed; accept nothing less than 2.4 GHz. If you do plan to run many programs at once—perhaps an analytics app, word processor, Spotfy, Google Hangouts, a design program, and a browser—you might want to look for dual core or even quad core options. These computers have more than one processor, giving them more power.
RAM stands for Random Access Memory. The RAM allocates memory to the programs you are running. When your computer freezes up, it is usually due to having too little RAM. For bloggers who have special programs on their computer, such as photo editing software, you will want at least 8GB of RAM, and possibly as much as 12GB.
Your hard drive is what holds all the items on your computer. Once upon a time, it was important to have a very large hard drive, but now with so much being done using cloud computing, it really isn’t as important anymore. Rather than worrying about how much your hard drive can hold, sorry about the type of hard drive the computer offers. Mechanical hard drives are more common, but solid state drives load faster.
