One of my colleagues at the public library where I work had a program for the tweens and teens: Ductivities. My co-worker bought a variety of duct tape to be used by the attendees and we were guided by books and technology to create different things. One of the attendees is a budding entrepreneur and he taught us all how to create roses using an ink pen!
It was simple enough that I have re-created a pen within minutes at my home.
Supplies:
Duct tape
Ink pen
Step one:
Rip off a piece of duct tape the length of the pen. Wrap the pen with this piece of tape.
Step two:
Tear off squares of duct tape, about 2 inches long.
Step three:
With the sticky side of the tape up, fold one edge towards the middle of the square Leave some stickiness on the side and bottom.
Step four:
Take the parallel edge and fold it over, leaving only stickiness on the bottom of the strip.
Step five:
Add the sticky side to the top of your pen, with points going up. Add pieces of tape until the flower is the size you want. (I prefer a smaller ‘flower’ but you may add ‘petals’ until the flower is the size you’d like.
This was a relatively easy and and inexpensive activity. I bought Duct Tape for 3.99 and used pens that I had at home. The craft itself, once you are comfortable measuring the leaves, took all of 15-20 minutes to complete.
Now you are writing pretty!

Cool project! And very easy. This would be a great way to personalize pens & pencils for my girls, who fight over them 🙂
With the duct tape so inexpensive I say go for it!
Super Cute. What a great way to make something boring like a pen . . fun!
I know! It gives new life to all of our pens!
That was cute! I think boys and girls would like this (thinking about The Boy and his aversion to girlyness).
There is all kinds of prints! He could make a wallet too.
My son is the duct tape king – he made his school backpack out of duct tape!!! I’ll have to share this with him for Valentine’s Day as a hint for Mom!! 🙂 Pinned & Tweeted!
A back pack…WOW!
How neat. I’ve always wanted to try this!
It was so easy to do. I can’t believe how simple it was!
Cute! I could see the kids liking this for school!
My daughter took mine to school and all of the kids in her class thought she bought it.
So cute! My daughters are all about the duct tape right now so this project is right up their alley. We will have to put this on our rainy day craft list. Thanks!
The thanks really goes to my library kids! They were so excited to make this and I got caught up in the excitement.
Cute idea!
The kids at the library started it and I got hooked!
I have seen people using duct tapes to make a lot of things. I even see books teaching how to make tote bags, wallets, headclips in the library. If I remember it right, I even have seen youtube videos teaching how to make clothes out of duct tapes.
I tried to make a headband but got too frustrated. The rose seemed easiest and was fun.
I’m not a crafty mom because the thought of glue and glitter in my home make me cringe. I like the idea of a cheap, clean craft even my 2 year old can do.
Thanks for sharing!
We totally have a ban on glitter, sand, packing peanuts and the like but this was so doable!
Very cute!
Thanks!
hmmm. Now you have me looking around my house for things to tape.
It was so easy! My daighter and I are working on an apron.
I did not know you could get duct tape in cool patters and colors like that.
That is awesome! I love the duct tape too. I’ve always wanted to spot my pens, I might have to try this… Thanks for sharing!
