DIY Homemade Fancy Towels and Soap Sets

Check it Out! I have been crafting for many years, since I was a teen, and over the years I have made many things that have brought me in some money. My mother and I use to do festivals and bazaar sales every spring and we would craft tons of things that would usually sell out.   Back then, country crafts were popular and we made everything from painted shirt and earrings to floral arrangements!  One of our most popular items were homemade fancy towels and soap sets. Back then I got around $5 for a set like the one in the pic above.

It is so easy to make an old towel fancy with a little lace and ribbon and how cute are those decorated soaps?  Why decorate a bar of soap, you may say… well not only is it decorative, but it is fragrant.  You can use any size or shape and smell soap you want and it’s kinda like an air freshener!  Pair the towels and soap together in a pretty basket and you can dress up any bathroom.  If you sew or in my case, use fabric hot glue, on the towels, you can also wash them, so they are more than just decoration!

Okay so here is how I make the soaps:

I used a small bar of Ivory soap for this one, but again any size will work.  I have even used those tiny soaps from the hotel!

First wrap some ribbon around the bar of soap long ways and then add a strip the other way, hot glue it all in place.  Using the same ribbon and lace from the towels, I created some pinwheels by stitching a thread through the edge and pulling it into gathers until I get the look I want.  I then layered them and glued them on with a pretty button to finish off the center.

If you find yourself in a bind one day without any soap, you can always pull back the lace and use your fancy soap, then just rewrap it around another bar later!  If you have a good stockpile of bar soaps, you could make a basket full for the countertop!

I found some plain towels at JCPenney’s a few weeks ago for $1 and the washcloths were $0.50, not crazy about the color, but they do match the kids bathroom, which is also the guest bath.  Here is how I made them…

Using the stitching lines already on the towel as my straight line, I glued down a wider strip of lace on the bottom and then added a smaller width to the top and then added my ribbon down the center of the lace. That’s it!  If you wanted to add other embellishments, like a monogram or a little floral deco, you could glue on a pin so that you can remove it to wash it or you could pick up some clip deco’s like these cute little things I found marked down at JoAnne’s.
